Dubai, UAE – What started as a routine childbirth turned into a dramatic fight for survival when a rare and deadly obstetric emergency struck at International Modern Hospital (IMH) in Bur Dubai. Thanks to swift medical intervention and teamwork, both the mother and her newborn were saved.
Radhikaben Sachin Dolakiya, a 33-year-old mother from India, was admitted to IMH last month for induced labor due to high blood sugar levels, excess amniotic fluid, and an unusually large baby. The situation quickly escalated when Radhikaben experienced a sudden and life-threatening amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) during labor.
Dr. Meera T Anto, Specialist Gynecologist at IMH, described the incident: “Everything seemed under control until Radhikaben’s water broke, a normal event in childbirth, but within moments she collapsed. Her pulse weakened, and her heart rate dropped dangerously. Simultaneously, the baby’s heart rate plummeted, indicating immediate danger for both mother and child.”
Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare but severe complication occurring when amniotic fluid enters the mother's bloodstream, potentially causing critical cardiovascular collapse. Recognizing the emergency, the medical team immediately initiated an emergency cesarean section.
During surgery, Radhikaben’s condition worsened as she developed disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), causing significant internal bleeding and a blood loss of approximately 2.5 liters. She received eight pints of blood, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), and other essential blood products to stabilize her condition.
Even after the operation, Radhikaben faced complications. A rectus sheath hematoma, a serious abdominal muscle bleeding complication, was discovered. The hospital’s interventional radiology team swiftly performed a minimally invasive embolization procedure, successfully controlling the bleeding and preventing further complications.
"It was truly a miracle in the delivery room," said Dr. Anto. "The remarkable recovery of both mother and child demonstrates how rapid response, cutting-edge medical care, and outstanding teamwork can overcome even the most critical obstetric emergencies."
Today, both Radhikaben and her baby are healthy and thriving. Expressing deep gratitude, Radhikaben said, “Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Anto and the incredible team at IMH for their exceptional care and unwavering support. Their quick thinking and compassion saved our lives, and I will forever be grateful.”
This remarkable story underlines the importance of expert medical intervention and rapid decision-making during childbirth emergencies, highlighting International Modern Hospital Dubai’s commitment to excellence in maternal healthcare.
