China reveals processor ‘a million times faster’ than US opponent

(MENAFN) Chinese researchers have introduced a groundbreaking superconducting quantum computing prototype that they claim vastly outperforms Google's top quantum processors. The newly developed chip, named Zuchongzhi-3, is said to be a million times faster than Google's Sycamore and a quadrillion times more efficient than the most powerful traditional supercomputers, according to its creators.

Developed by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in collaboration with multiple scientific institutions, the processor’s performance was detailed in a recent study published in Physical Review Letters.

Testing reportedly confirmed that Zuchongzhi-3 surpasses Google’s Sycamore processor, which was unveiled in October 2024 and was initially claimed to outperform conventional supercomputers in handling complex calculations.

The exact comparison between Zuchongzhi-3 and Google's newer Willow quantum processor, launched in December, remains uncertain. While both have similar processing capabilities, Live Science reported that Willow has an edge in coherence time, a key factor for handling advanced computations. Google has yet to respond to the Chinese claims.

China has significantly increased investments in AI and quantum computing, following President Xi Jinping’s call to accelerate research in fundamental technologies. The country is pushing for greater technological self-sufficiency in critical areas such as semiconductor development, space exploration, and military sciences.

Bloomberg previously reported that in 2022, China filed 29,853 AI-related patents, nearly 80% more than the US, highlighting its rapid advancements in cutting-edge technology.
