China denies COVID-19 lab leak theory, calls It ‘extremely unlikely’

(MENAFN) The Chinese government’s stance came on Thursday after reports surfaced that BND, Germany’s foreign intelligence service, had suggested the COVID-19 pandemic may have resulted from an accidental leak at a laboratory in Wuhan, stating that it is "extremely unlikely" the virus emerged in this way.

In a press briefing, Foreign Ministry representative Mao Ning reaffirmed the position of the Chinese government, stating, "It is ‘extremely unlikely’ that the pandemic was caused by a lab leak. This is the authoritative conclusion reached by the experts of the WHO-China joint mission based on science following their field trips to the lab in Wuhan and in-depth communication with researchers."

German media outlets reported that Mao Ning’s statement followed the emergence of reports on Wednesday in which Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, BND, proposed that the pandemic might have originated from a laboratory mishap at a Chinese virus research facility.

Mao further emphasized, “We believe the COVID-19 origins-tracing is a matter of science, and the judgment should be made by scientists and the science-based spirit should be upheld.” She added that this inference has been largely endorsed by the international society, such as prominent scientific organizations and authorities.
