Former Israeli Defense Minister accuses Netanyahu
(MENAFN) On Saturday, previous Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon suspected Premier Benjamin Netanyahu of delaying the second stage of the truce as well as captive-inmate exchange agreement with Hamas to mollify far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
The 42-day first stage of the ceasefire agreement ended on March 2 after multiple captive-inmate exchange deals.
The second stage, which is intended to discuss a long-lasting truce to the war in Gaza, such as recovering the rest of the hostages as well as the retreat of Israeli forces from the region completely, is yet to start.
In a remark, Ya’alon stated that Netanyahu "is delaying the implementation of the second phase of the agreement with Hamas to prevent Smotrich from dismantling his coalition, which is essential to keeping Netanyahu in power."
Ya’alon mentioned Smotrich prioritizes “resuming military operations in Gaza over proceeding with negotiations, even if it means abandoning Israeli captives.”
