Trump US declares annexation of Greenland ‘will happen’

(MENAFN) President Donald trump recently discussed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte the possibility of the US-led military alliance assisting in “securing” Greenland. This comes after Trump reignited discussions about acquiring the Danish autonomous territory, which he first proposed during his first term in 2019. Speaking to Congress, Trump declared that the US would secure Greenland "one way or the other."

When asked about the potential annexation of Greenland, Trump expressed confidence, stating, "I think it will happen." He turned to NATO chief Mark Rutte during a meeting in the Oval Office, emphasizing the importance of Greenland for international security. Trump cited the presence of adversaries near Greenland’s coast, suggesting the need for NATO's involvement in the matter.

Rutte downplayed the annexation proposal, but agreed with Trump on the significance of security in the Arctic, pointing to the growing influence of Russia and China in the region. He stressed the importance of Western countries working together under US leadership to address these security concerns.

Trump reiterated that the US "really needs" Greenland for both national and international security purposes. He mentioned that the US already has military bases and soldiers stationed in Greenland, suggesting the possibility of increasing the military presence there.

Trump’s comments were met with a swift response from Greenland's outgoing prime minister, Mute Egede, who criticized the US president’s remarks about annexation, declaring, "Enough is enough." Greenland holds significant strategic value due to its location and natural resources, and is home to a major US military base at Thule.
