FSB reports Ukrainian letter bomb plan frustrated
(MENAFN) Russia’s federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it foiled a series of planned Ukrainian terrorist attacks by intercepting letter bombs intended for Russian military personnel and state employees. The agency revealed that during a check of postal items at an airport in Chelyabinsk, five parcels containing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) disguised as perfume gift sets were discovered. The devices were set to detonate upon receipt.
A Russian man in his early 20s, who mailed the explosive packages, was detained in Pervouralsk, Yekaterinburg Region. The suspect had been recruited by Ukrainian intelligence agents through a messaging app earlier this month. He was tasked with retrieving the explosives from a cache in Chelyabinsk and sending them via Russian Post to military and government officials in Moscow, Voronezh, Krasnodar, and Saratov regions. The suspect was promised $6,000 for completing the mission, but the Ukrainian handlers ceased contact once the parcels were mailed.
The FSB also uncovered a second cache containing four more IEDs intended for servicemen in Tver, Rostov, Nizhny Novgorod, and Kaluga regions. The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case against the suspect for handling illegal explosives, with some officials considering terrorism charges.
The FSB urged vigilance, warning against accepting parcels or gifts from unknown senders due to the ongoing terrorist activities linked to Ukrainian intelligence operations.
