Trump intends on scraping Education Department

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is reportedly set to sign an executive order that would move toward dismantling the Department of Education, as part of his broader efforts to restructure government agencies and cut unnecessary spending, according to the Wall Street Journal. This initiative, which has been anticipated since early February, could be finalized as soon as Thursday.

A draft of the order, reviewed by the Journal, directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all necessary steps to close the department as much as legally possible. The order cites the failure of federal education programs to benefit children, teachers, and families as justification for its closure.

The Department of Education is responsible for enforcing education-related laws on privacy, civil rights, and ensuring equal access to education, as well as administering federal grants for low-income students. The Heritage Foundation's conservative Project 2025 proposal has suggested relocating the department’s civil rights functions to the Justice Department and transferring student loans to the Treasury Department, alongside reducing funding for schools based on low-income student enrollment.

Trump, who has long advocated for abolishing the Department of Education, previously pushed for its elimination during his first term, but Congress did not act on the proposal. The order argues that the department, since its creation in 1979, has spent over $1 trillion without improving student achievement in reading and mathematics.

Education Secretary McMahon expressed her commitment to returning control over education to the states, emphasizing the need to eliminate bureaucratic inefficiency at the department. Under the current administration, layoffs, buyouts, and reductions in civil rights enforcement have already occurred, and several education-related grants and contracts have been canceled. The department, with around 4,200 employees, oversees approximately 100,000 public and 34,000 private schools in the US.
