Russia, India plan on collaborating on wide front in space
(MENAFN) Russia and India will significantly expand their long-standing space collaboration to include lunar missions, Mars exploration, and automated space stations, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev told RT.
Speaking in New Delhi, Artemyev highlighted the six-decade-long partnership between the two nations and outlined future joint efforts in Earth's orbit, lunar exploration, and beyond. "We will work together in Earth orbit, then on the Moon—both its visible and far sides—and eventually head to Mars, exploring asteroids along the way," he stated.
During his visit, Artemyev met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the NXT Conclave, where he reaffirmed the strong ties between India and Russia. Modi reportedly described Russia as a "friend" and expressed commitment to deepening cooperation in space.
As a symbolic gesture, Artemyev presented Modi with a book by space pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, an Indian tricolor flag that had traveled to space, a Russian flag, and a sculpture of Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space. He praised India's recent achievements, including the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, which successfully landed near the Moon’s south pole in August 2023.
The cosmonaut also commended India's astronaut training program, particularly the four Air Force test pilots selected for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission. The astronauts trained at Russia’s Gagarin Center, and Artemyev described them as “among the best people on our planet.”
