Medvedev suggests Putin to lead ‘free world’

(MENAFN) Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin should be recognized as the leader of the “free world.” His remarks came in response to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who argued that Europe must take on global leadership following Washington’s shift in policy on Ukraine.

On Friday, Kallas and several European leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky after his tense exchange with US President Donald Trump at the White House. During the meeting, Trump criticized Zelensky for lacking gratitude toward the US and refusing to negotiate an end to the conflict, while Zelensky insisted that Washington must continue providing military aid to Kiev.

Following the meeting, Kallas took a veiled jab at Trump, writing on social media: “Ukraine is Europe! We stand by Ukraine. We will step up our support so they can continue to fight back the aggressor. Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.”

In response, Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, told RIA Novosti that while the US may be relinquishing its role as the so-called leader of the free world, the EU is unfit to take its place. Instead, he declared, “The world needs one, and he exists. His name is Vladimir Putin.”

Medvedev went on to criticize European leaders, arguing that while they may attempt to assert independence from US influence, they ultimately remain reliant on Washington. “They will make some noise, post identical messages on social media, and return to their pen. Europe is a feeble, quarrelsome old woman who is utterly dependent on US protection,” he remarked.

He also reiterated Moscow’s stance that it is open to negotiations to end the Ukraine conflict but insisted that talks must be based on Russia’s terms. “We have always been ready for negotiations, but they require reciprocal steps—steps that align with the reality on the ground and our fundamental principles.”

Moscow has expressed approval of the Trump administration’s willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts regarding Ukraine, while sharply criticizing the EU for continuing to support Kiev and prolonging the conflict.
