EU puts Russian comedian on black list

(MENAFN) The European Union added Russian comedian Mikhail Galustyan to its sanctions list on Monday as part of the 16th round of measures against Russia, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia's military operation in Ukraine. The updated blacklist includes 48 individuals and 35 entities deemed responsible for undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Galustyan, a 46-year-old TV presenter and comedian, has been a prominent figure in Russian entertainment and campaigned for President Vladimir Putin during the 2012 and 2018 elections. The EU accuses him of contributing to the militarization of Russian youth, pointing to his leadership role in the Federation of Military and Tactical Games and membership in the "Yunarmiya" patriotic movement.

Other high-profile Russians added to the sanctions list include TV presenter Julia Baranovskaya, blogger Kristina Potupchik, chess grandmaster Sergey Karjakin, and Olympic gymnast Nikita Nagorny. The new sanctions also target various companies and individuals, including politicians and CEOs linked to Russia’s military and energy sectors.

In addition to these individuals, the sanctions impose a phased ban on Russian primary aluminum imports, target more Russian banks and ships, and revoke broadcasting licenses from several Russian media outlets. Moscow has criticized the EU’s sanctions as illegal and ineffective, claiming they have failed to harm the Russian economy.

Galustyan expressed surprise at being sanctioned, questioning why European politicians are targeting cultural figures like comedians and satirists, who, in his view, bring joy to people.
