Putin aide explains Moscow’s method to US discussions

(MENAFN) Russia's top foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, has clarified that upcoming high-level talks between Russia and the US in Riyadh will be bilateral discussions, excluding third countries. This statement follows remarks from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who declared that any talks held without Ukraine's involvement would be considered “null and void.”

Ushakov confirmed that the talks, set for Tuesday, are aimed at discussing the resolution of the Ukraine conflict. The Russian delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ushakov himself, with the possibility of Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund (RDIF), joining as well. On the US side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and special envoy Steve Witkoff will represent Washington.

Zelensky made it clear that Ukraine would not recognize any agreements between Russia and the US unless Ukrainian representatives were included in the negotiations. The Riyadh talks follow a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the leaders agreed to start talks aimed at ending the three-year conflict.

Saudi Arabia, which has facilitated prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, was chosen as the location for the talks, as it is diplomatically connected to both nations. The RDIF, involved in initiatives within the BRICS group, has also been a part of discussions on Saudi Arabia’s potential membership in the bloc.
