Japan's SKY Perfect To Build Defense Satellite Constellation
SKY Perfect JSAT is a provider of satellite TV broadcasting services and the operator of the largest satellite communications business in Asia. With 17 satellites in geostationary orbit, it currently provides satellite coverage from North America to the Indian Ocean for both commercial and governmental purposes.
Planet Labs designs, builds and operates the world's largest fleet of Earth imaging satellites, providing data and related services to private enterprise and government agencies. For the past decade, SKY Perfect has been selling Planet's satellite imaging products in Japan.
SKY Perfect plans to spend about US$230 million to acquire 10 high-resolution“Pelican” low earth orbit observation satellites built and launched by Planet. The establishment of ground stations is expected to bring Sky Perfect's total investment in the project to about $260 million.
As per the agreement, Planet will secure“certain capacity on the satellites for the partner, in addition to providing operational services.” It will also“leverage the increased capacity of the expanded fleet to serve its own government and commercial customers around the world.”
Rather than a straightforward sale, this is a collaboration that will add SKY Perfect to Planet's global earth observation satellite network. It will be put into effect through JSAT Beyond Innovation LLC, an entity to be established through SKY Perfect JSAT's 100%-owned US subsidiary, JSAT International.
