Ambani secures top of Asia’s wealthiest families list

(MENAFN) Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, has secured the top spot on Bloomberg’s list of Asia’s 20 richest families, released on Thursday. Ambani, along with his wife Nita, was among the select business figures who attended US President Donald Trump’s inauguration last month.

Ambani took control of Reliance Industries in 2002 after the death of his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, the company's founder. Under his leadership, Ambani expanded Reliance's operations beyond oil refining into areas such as financial services, retail, technology, renewable energy, and media. The company is planning to build the world’s largest data center in India, based in Jamnagar, where Reliance's refinery is located. The project is part of the company’s push into artificial intelligence.

In 2022, Ambani introduced a succession plan for Reliance Industries, designating his twins Akash and Isha for telecom and retail, while his youngest son Anant will head the new energy unit.

The list includes six Indian families, with Ambani’s family leading the ranks. The Mistry family, ranked fourth with a net worth of $37.5 billion, controls Shapoorji Pallonji Group and holds a significant stake in Tata Sons, the parent company of the Tata Group. The Jindal family ranks seventh, with a net worth of $28.1 billion, thanks to their diverse conglomerate, OP Jindal Group, which operates in energy, cement, and sports.

The Birla family holds the ninth spot on the list with a net worth of $23 billion. Their business interests span metals, cement, and financial services, with a legacy that dates back to the 19th century, starting with cotton trading. Today, Kumar Mangalam Birla, the great-grandson of Ghanshyam Das Birla, leads the family business.

However, the list excludes first-generation businesses, which is why Indian tycoon Gautam Adani, whose net worth is second only to Ambani’s, does not appear. Adani, who is facing US corruption charges, has denied the allegations, calling them "baseless."
