Many wounded following vehicle collides into crowd in Germany
(MENAFN) At least fifteen people were injured when a car drove into a crowd during a union rally in Munich, Germany, according to local reports. Eyewitnesses stated that the car intentionally collided with the group, and some claimed there were two attackers, one of whom was shot by police and taken into custody.
Munich police confirmed the incident on social media, stating that a vehicle had driven into a crowd, and that they had a strong presence at the scene. Authorities also confirmed the driver had been apprehended and no longer posed a threat. The police issued a warning about traffic disruptions in the area and urged locals to avoid the site to allow emergency responders to work.
The rally, organized by the United Services Union (Verdi), was a one-day "warning strike" for public sector employees demanding higher pay, better bonuses, and more time off. Martin Hagen, chairman of the FDP Bavaria, shared that the incident occurred at Munich’s Konigsplatz, with medical helicopters circling the scene.
Currently, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the identities of the attackers are not known. The union subsequently called off the rally, and reports indicated that children were among the injured. Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his shock at the event and confirmed that the suspected assailant was in police custody, though further details on their background are still unknown.
