UK Likely to Align with US on Anti-AI Regulation Approach, Official Says

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom may decide not to sign an international agreement on artificial intelligence (AI) due to concerns raised by the United States over the proposal’s heavy focus on regulation. According to a senior British official speaking to Politico, Washington's opinion on the matter is significant and cannot be overlooked.

At the AI Action Summit in Paris on Tuesday, US Vice President J.D. Vance expressed his concern that excessive regulation could potentially stifle a rapidly growing and transformative industry. “I’m not here this morning to talk about AI safety, which was the title of the conference a couple of years ago; I’m here to talk about AI opportunity,” Vance remarked, highlighting the US’s intention to prioritize pro-growth AI policies.

British Technology Secretary Peter Kyle echoed this sentiment, describing the US as a powerful and influential force that the UK must engage with closely. He pointed out that the trends in AI development are largely driven by the technology’s own capabilities, with both the US and UK adapting to these realities.
