Ukraine raises concerns that Russian preteen pop stars song contains ‘information war’

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation has raised concerns that the viral pop song "Sigma Boy," performed by preteen Russian singers Betsy (Svetlana Chertishcheva) and Maria Yankovskaya, is part of a larger "information war" aimed at improving Russia’s image among young people. The song, which debuted in October 2024, has gained significant attention on platforms like TikTok and reached the top ten on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Ukraine's disinformation watchdog, which operates under the National Security and Defense Council, has suggested that the Kremlin could be influencing the song’s popularity, drawing comparisons to Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 US elections. The agency argues that "Sigma Boy" promotes a positive image of Russia, helping normalize the country's cultural influence abroad.

The watchdog drew parallels between the song's success and the tactics used by Russian bands like "Tatu" and "Glukoza" in the 2000s to enhance Russia's image through music. German Volt Party MEP Nela Rill has also called for a ban on the track in the EU, accusing it of spreading pro-Russian and patriarchal messages.

The song’s creators, however, have denied any political motives. Composer Mikhail Chertishchev stated that "Sigma Boy" is simply a lighthearted song about relationships, with no hidden political or social commentary. The lyrics reference the "Sigma male" persona, a concept from internet culture portraying an independent, self-sufficient man.

Despite the backlash, the song's online reception has been mixed. Some users argue that the criticisms are overblown, while others believe the controversy has only increased the song’s appeal, citing the Streisand effect.
