Letter To Editor Thousands Of Nursing Posts Remain Vacant In J&K

Thousands of qualified healthcare aspirants, who once believed in a bright future, now find themselves drowning in uncertainty. Years of hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifices seem to be in vain as non-gazetted posts in the health department remain vacant, untouched, and forgotten.

These vacancies are not just numbers on a government file, they represent the hopes of young men and women who want to serve, to heal, to be the backbone of J&K's healthcare system. Hospitals lack staff, patients suffer, and our youth lose faith in the system. Is this the future we deserve? Many of us are crossing the age limit for recruitment, our hopes slipping away with each passing day. How can we explain to our families that despite our diploma's, we are still jobless-not because of our shortcomings, but because of endless delays?

Hon'ble Health Minister of J&K, please hear us. The government promised employment, but all we have received is disappointment. Fill these vacant posts before it's too late-before our futures are completely shattered.

Jammu & Kashmir has witnessed the establishment of new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in recent years, promising better healthcare services and increased employment opportunities. However, while infrastructure has expanded, the backbone of the healthcare system-nurses-remains neglected. Since 2020, only a small number of staff nurses have been recruited, while thousands of qualified candidates continue to wait in uncertainty and despair.

The healthcare system in J&K is in dire need of skilled nursing professionals, yet No new staff nurse posts have been created in the past four years. Hospitals are overwhelmed, patient loads are increasing, and existing healthcare staff are overburdened. Despite this, recruitment for nurses has remained stagnant.

The lack of nursing recruitment is not just a matter of unemployment, it is a crisis that affects the entire healthcare system. Patients in hospitals are suffering due to insufficient staff, existing nurses are overworked, and the quality of healthcare is declining. How can we expect quality healthcare when our hospitals are running without adequate nursing staff?

We urge the Hon'ble Health Minister Sakina Itoo and the concerned authorities to address this issue immediately. New posts must be created, and long-pending vacancies must be filled. It is unfair to leave thousands of qualified candidates in distress while the healthcare sector desperately needs manpower.
