Geopolitics of AI will be focal point of major summit in France
(MENAFN) The geopolitics of artificial intelligence (AI) will be the focal point of a major summit in France, where leaders, executives, and experts will convene to shape the future of this rapidly advancing technology. The summit is part of ongoing global discussions about AI governance and is happening amid the emergence of the controversial Chinese chatbot DeepSeek, which has stirred market disruption by offering advanced features at a low cost. The event, starting on February 10, will feature U.S. Vice President JD Vance, marking his first international trip since taking office, and China will be represented by a special envoy from President Xi Jinping, underlining the significance of the summit.
The two-day summit in Paris will bring together heads of state, government officials, tech leaders, and researchers, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The aim is to discuss harnessing AI's potential for global benefit while implementing safeguards to mitigate its risks. Prominent figures such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai will attend. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who attended the 2023 summit in Bletchley Park, England, and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng have also been invited, though their attendance is not confirmed.
The summit will include workshops at the Grand Palais on Monday, followed by a formal dinner at the Elysee Palace, where world leaders and business leaders are expected to give speeches during the closing session on Tuesday.
