Shell Eco-Marathon Kicks Off

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Shell Eco-marathon Asia Pacific and the Middle East has officially commenced with a grand opening ceremony held at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar, a statement said.
Under the patronage of HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, this landmark event marks the first time Shell Eco-marathon is being hosted in the Middle East, bringing together innovative student teams from around the globe.
The opening ceremony was a celebration of innovation, sustainability, and the spirit of competition and a showcase of the cutting-edge, energy-efficient vehicles designed by the participating student teams.
Rob Maxwell, managing director of Shell Companies Qatar, shared his enthusiasm: "As we kick off the first-ever Shell Eco-marathon in the Middle East, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our partners who have played a crucial role in making this event a reality. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future."
Shell Eco-marathon is a global academic programme that challenges student teams to design and manufacture vehicles that can travel the farthest using the least amount of fuel. The programme aims to push the boundaries of what is technically possible and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to develop future energy solutions.
This year's event features over 60 teams from 16 countries. Qatar is represented by teams from Qatar University, Texas A&M University at Qatar, University of Doha for Science and Technology, and Qatar Technical School for Girls. They are participating in two vehicle classes: Urban Concept and Prototype. The vehicles are powered by internal combustion engines, battery electric systems, or hydrogen fuel cells, showcasing advanced engineering techniques and innovative designs.
The opening ceremony set the stage for an exciting week of competition, collaboration, and learning. Student teams will have the opportunity to test their vehicles on the track, engage in technical inspections, and participate in various workshops and networking events.
During the event, visitors had the opportunity to drive a purpose-built Shell Eco-marathon vehicle powered by gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuel produced in Qatar. Qatar hosts the world's largest GTL plant, where Shell's GTL technology converts natural gas – the cleanest-burning fossil fuel – into high-quality liquid products. These products, which would otherwise be made from crude oil, include transport fuels, motor oils, and ingredients for everyday necessities like plastics, detergents, and cosmetics.
Shell Eco-marathon in Qatar is set to continue throughout the week, culminating in the final race and awards ceremony.
