PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Peshawar High Court has directed law-enforcement agencies not to extort money from vehicles transporting goods to and from Afghanistan.

The top Khyber Pakhtunkhwa court also ordered federal and provincial authorities to inspect the cargo vehicles at checkpoints on highways from the port city of Karachi to Torkham.

Justice Shakeel Ahmad and Justice Sabitullah Khan issued the directives on a petition filed by Afghan transport Union (ATU) President Mohammad Noor Ahmadzai.

The petitioner had sought an end to brazen extortion from transporters by different law-enforcement agencies in the name of security and drug checks.

The interior secretary, principal secretary to the prime minister, Federal Board of Revenue, Frontier Constabulary commandant, KP police officer, secretaries of excise, local government, forestry and wildlife and chairman of National Highway Authority were respondents.

Due to illegal gratification/extortion by law-enforcement agencies, the cost of transportation shot up and transporters and the public were inconvenienced, argued Advocate Ameenur Rehman Yousafzai, counsel for the petitioner.
