IBM's Quantum Ambitions: Aiming For A 4,000-Qubit Processor By 2025
IBM has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop a 4,000-qubit quantum processor by 2025, marking a significant leap from its current 127-qubit 'Eagle' processor. This initiative underscores IBM's commitment to advancing quantum computing capabilities and addressing the challenges inherent in scaling up quantum systems.
The company's roadmap outlines a progression through intermediate processors, including the 1,121-qubit 'Condor' slated for 2023 and the 1,386-qubit 'Flamingo' expected in 2024. Achieving these milestones will involve a modular architecture, connecting multiple chips via short-range couplers and cryogenic microwave cables to function as a cohesive processor.
A critical aspect of this development is the creation of an intelligent software layer designed to manage errors, integrate classical computing resources, and simplify programming. Blake Johnson, IBM's quantum platform lead, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating that classical resources can enhance quantum capabilities, necessitating tools that allow seamless collaboration between quantum and classical computations.
Error mitigation remains a primary focus, with techniques like probabilistic error cancellation being explored. This method involves running noisy quantum circuits to understand error patterns, followed by classical post-processing to reduce inaccuracies. IBM plans to incorporate such error mitigation strategies into its Qiskit Runtime software platform by 2024, aiming to automate these processes for users.
In addition to hardware advancements, IBM is enhancing its software tools to accelerate applications and tackle complex problems. The company has introduced predefined programs, known as 'primitives,' within the Qiskit Runtime, enabling developers to build applications more efficiently. Starting in 2023, IBM intends to allow these primitives to run in parallel across multiple quantum processors, thereby increasing computational speed.
