Amman, Feb. 7 (Petra) -- Recent rainfall from a passing weather system has delivered a significant boost to the country's dam reservoirs.
The Ministry of Water and Irrigation reported that the latest stormfront contributed 10 million cubic meters of water to the kingdom's key dams, with a notable 7 million cubic meters entering the reservoirs in just the past 24 hours.
As of Friday, total storage across the kingdom's 15 major dams has reached 80 million cubic meters, equating to 28% of their total capacity of 288 million cubic meters substantially lower than last year's 43% at this time, when reserves stood at 127 million cubic meters.
The Ministry's statement highlighted the uneven distribution of rainfall, with the highest amounts recorded in Ajloun's Abin region.
This brings the cumulative rainfall for the season to 24.7% of the expected annual total, starkly contrasting with the 61% recorded at this time last year.
The King Talal Dam, which saw the largest intake, now holds 3.6 million cubic meters nearly 39 million cubic meters, or 58% of its capacity.
The Mujib Dam, another vital water source, received 1.1 million cubic meters, pushing its storage to 13.7 million cubic meters, or 55% full. Meanwhile, the Wala Dam added 900,000 cubic meters, increasing its reserves to 9.5% of total capacity.
Smaller amounts of water flowed into other dams, excluding the Tanour Dam in Tafila, which saw no significant inflow.
Despite the lower-than-average seasonal rainfall, the increased water levels in the dams provide a temporary respite for a country that remains under the strain of persistent water shortages.
