India's Energy Startups Secure RS 547 Cr Boost Ahead Of IEW 2025
The event marks a significant expansion from its previous editions in Bangalore and Goa, with over 700 exhibiting companies, 500 speakers, and more than 6,000 delegates expected to attend.
Minister of petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, recently announced the winners of two prestigious startup challenges at ONGC headquarters.
UrjanovaC Pvt Ltd secured the top position in Avinya'25, India's premier energy startup competition, followed by Breathe ESG Private Limited, AgriVijay, Apeiro Energy, and UGreen Technology.
In the Vasudha global startup challenge, focused on upstream oil and gas, Latin Energy Partners Inc. from Paraguay emerged victorious, with USA-based Ultrasound Process Consulting LLC as the runner-up.
The minister emphasised the crucial role of Public Sector Units under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in driving innovation through a substantial Rs. 547.35 crore startup fund.
This initiative has already supported 303 startups with Rs. 286.36 crore, contributing to India's robust ecosystem of over 110 unicorns.
The winning startups will join fourteen PSU startups in a dedicated startup pavilion at IEW 2025, showcasing the breadth of innovation in India's energy sector.
Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, underscored the continued importance of fossil fuels in India's energy landscape, noting their relevance for the next 25 years.
He highlighted the vast potential in hydrocarbon exploration, citing several terabytes of seismic data available for analysis in India's open waters.
The selection process for these startup challenges was rigorous, as noted by jury members including Sarthak Behuria, Former Chairman of IOCL and ONGC, and Dr. Suddhasatwa Basu, FIPI Chair Professor at IIT Delhi.
The evaluation focused on innovations addressing energy security, transition, and affordability, with Dr. P Chandrasekaran, Former Director at OIL, emphasising the event's significance for academia, industry professionals, and government policy formulation.
India's position as the world's third-largest startup ecosystem is evidenced by over 1.57 lakh certificates issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) for startup recognition as of December 31, 2024.
This entrepreneurial landscape, powered by more than 100 unicorns, continues to drive innovation and create new opportunities across various sectors.
