Tesla Sales Plummet in Germany Amid Musk's Far-Right Endorsement

(MENAFN) Tesla's sales in Germany took a significant hit last month, according to official data released on Wednesday, following billionaire Elon Musk's public support for the country's far-right political movement.

Only 1,277 Tesla electric vehicles were registered in Germany in January, marking a nearly 60 percent decline compared to the same month last year, as reported by the KBA federal transport authority.

While Tesla, like other electric vehicle manufacturers, has faced a downturn in sales over the past year due to the removal of government subsidies and a general slowdown in EV demand across Europe, the sharp decline in Tesla's performance in January contrasts with a recovery in Germany's broader electric car market.

Musk, who has been an advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, caused a stir by endorsing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the February 23 elections and has frequently criticized the country’s political leaders. Despite Musk's outspoken support, the AfD had already been gaining momentum in the polls, currently holding second place behind the center-right CDU party.
