NATO Reinforces Strong Partnership with Iraq During Secretary General’s Visit

(MENAFN) NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reinforced the military alliance's commitment to Iraq throughout his two-day trip to Baghdad, where he met with senior officials to review territorial safety and the growing role of NATO’s mission in the country.

Accompanied by US army Gen. Christopher Cavoli during February 4-5 trip, Rutte focused on how the mission has succeeded since the year of 2018. "I congratulate our Iraqi partners and NMI’s (NATO Mission Iraq) leadership and personnel for the excellent level of cooperation developed, in several domains, including security education, logistics, cyber defense, and good governance," he stated in a press release on Wednesday.

Rutte highlighted that NATO's efforts in Iraq, grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty, have played a vital role in reinforcing the nation’s security forces and institutions.
The mission, instituted upon Iraq's request, seeks to assist the nation in combating terrorism and avoiding the return of ISIS (Daesh).

"Together we have achieved a lot through our NATO-Iraq partnership," Rutte declared. "Upon request from the Iraqi authorities and in full respect of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, we are evolving the scope of our activities, in support to Iraq’s ongoing efforts towards lasting security and stability for all of its citizens."
