Newspaper reports Israeli army hastily declared deaths of Hamas leaders without proper verification

(MENAFN) The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported on Wednesday that the Israeli army hastily declared the deaths of Hamas leaders without proper verification, leading to errors in their announcements. These mistaken declarations occurred during the Israeli military's operation in Gaza, where the army initially claimed to have killed multiple Hamas commanders.

Security sources revealed that the Israeli military acknowledged its mistake, admitting that it had prematurely announced the deaths of certain Hamas leaders based on flawed intelligence. One notable case was the reappearance of Haitham al-Hawajri, commander of the Beach Brigade in the Qassam Brigades, who was reported killed but later appeared during the exchange of Israeli captive Keith Segal in the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. Similarly, Hussein Fayyad, commander of Hamas' Beit Hanoun Brigade, was reported dead in May, but was later seen at a funeral in Gaza.

The Israeli army and Shin Bet security service admitted their errors, explaining that earlier intelligence about figures like al-Hawajri was proven false. During the war, the Israeli military had claimed to eliminate over 100 senior Hamas commanders, yet the emergence of more leaders who were believed dead raises questions about the accuracy of these reports.

Amid growing skepticism about the reliability of the IDF’s statements, doubts have also surfaced regarding the army’s official casualty numbers. Eyal Zamir, Israel's designated chief of staff, recently revealed figures showing that 5,942 Israeli families had been affected by casualties from the war, with over 15,000 soldiers injured. However, the IDF's official tally remains significantly lower, sparking concerns that the true human and material losses are being concealed under strict censorship to maintain societal morale. Additionally, a ceasefire agreement reached on January 19 between Hamas and Israel, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, includes phases that will further shape the course of the ongoing conflict.
