Arab, Muslim American leaders voice strong opposition to Trump`s proposal for U.S. to take control of Gaza

(MENAFN) Arab and Muslim American leaders, including some who supported Donald trump in the 2024 election, have voiced strong opposition to his proposal for the U.S. to take control of Gaza and relocate Palestinians. They labeled it unacceptable and contradictory to the pursuit of lasting peace, but often described Trump’s comments as unrealistic threats. Bishara Bahbah, founder of the Arab Americans for Trump group and a key figure in Trump’s support in Michigan and other battleground states, told Reuters: “While his ideas may come with good intentions, they upset many people.” He emphasized that his group opposed the relocation of Palestinians, whether voluntary or forced. Despite his criticism, Bahbah continued to support Trump, believing he was the best choice to prevent conflict in Gaza. He also noted that his group recently changed its name to Arab Americans for Peace, reflecting a shift in focus post-election.

Trump's suggestion to take control of Gaza and relocate Palestinians was made during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He proposed resettling the Palestinians in neighboring countries and turning Gaza into a “Middle East Riviera” through redevelopment. Strategic analysts noted that Arab and Muslim American support likely contributed to Trump’s victories in several swing states, particularly in Michigan, which has the largest Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian population in the U.S. Many Arab and Muslim Americans opposed Vice President Kamala Harris in protest of the Biden administration's backing of Israel’s Gaza offensive, which was a response to the October 7, 2023, attacks. Some also credited Trump for helping to coordinate a ceasefire, even though it occurred before his return to the White House.

Rabel Chaudhry, co-founder of Muslims for Trump, expressed disappointment over the lack of a long-term solution for peace and reconstruction in Gaza, but stood by his support for Trump. He criticized the Biden administration for supplying weapons and support to Israel during the Gaza bombings, stating, “Confusing Trump’s rhetoric with the actions of Biden and Harris is not only insincere but completely dishonest.” Chaudhry argued that Trump’s actions, compared to those of Biden and Harris, made him a better option.
