Iran works on quicker method to build nuclear bomb
(MENAFN) Iranian scientists are reportedly working on a faster method to develop nuclear weapons, according to US intelligence sources cited by the New York Times. The covert team of Tehran-based researchers is exploring a quicker, though less refined, approach involving enriched nuclear fuel to create a functional atomic bomb within months. Iran is believed to have enough nuclear material to build at least four bombs.
While Iran's nuclear activities remain below the threshold for weaponization, recent developments in the region, such as the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah's weakening, have prompted Tehran to intensify its nuclear efforts. Intelligence gathered during the final months of President Joe Biden’s administration has been shared with President Donald Trump’s national security team.
The new information is expected to be discussed during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming state visit to the US. Netanyahu has considered military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities in the past, while Biden also reportedly contemplated military action before leaving office but ultimately refrained. Since taking office, Trump has signaled a preference for diplomacy over escalating tensions with Iran.
Iran has long denied claims of developing nuclear weapons, asserting its program is for peaceful purposes. Despite efforts to revive the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which limited Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, negotiations have stalled. Iran's foreign minister has expressed willingness to negotiate for a "mutually beneficial" deal based on respect.
