US struggles with tracing arms delivered to Ukraine

(MENAFN) US officials have struggled to track whether tens of billions of dollars in weapons sent to Ukraine were actually delivered, according to a Reuters report. The failure of tracking systems during the final year of former President Joe Biden's administration contributed to confusion, with key shipments facing delays due to concerns over depleting US stockpiles and potential escalation with Russia.

The Pentagon's tracking system, described as "chaotic" by sources, lacked consistency, including differing definitions of "delivered" across military branches. This caused significant inaccuracies in tracking weapons, making it nearly impossible to confirm their status. Investigations by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Pentagon's Inspector General revealed a lack of clarity on delivery numbers and shipment delays.

Despite internal efforts to clarify tracking procedures, including updating manuals, the system has remained flawed. By November 2024, the US had only delivered half of its 2024 commitment of weapons from stockpiles to Ukraine, with only 30% of promised armored vehicles arriving by early December. Ukrainian officials have expressed frustration over the delays, citing inadequate Western assistance as a factor in Ukraine’s struggles against Russian advances.
