Egypt rejects Palestinian displacement from Gaza
(MENAFN) Egypt announced on Sunday that it has a "clear vision" for the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip, emphasizing that this plan would not involve displacing Palestinians from their land.
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's commitment to ongoing efforts to implement the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which is being carried out in three stages. Speaking at a joint press conference in Cairo with Djiboutian counterpart Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Abdelatty stressed that Egypt's focus remains on rebuilding Gaza without forcing its residents to leave.
The statement came in response to a controversial suggestion made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who proposed that Palestinians in Gaza should be relocated to Egypt and Jordan. He referred to Gaza as a “demolition site” following Israel’s war. This proposal was immediately rejected by both Egypt and Jordan, with both countries asserting their stance against the displacement of Palestinians.
On Saturday, a six-nation Arab ministerial meeting in Cairo also firmly rejected the idea of Palestinian displacement and reiterated calls for the implementation of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The discussions took place after a ceasefire agreement, which went into effect on January 19, temporarily suspending the violence that has resulted in the deaths of nearly 47,500 people, mostly women and children, and injured over 111,000 since the start of the war on October 7, 2023.
