South Korean police raid Presidential Security Service over obstruction charges

(MENAFN) On Monday, South Korean Police conducted another raid on the Presidential Security Service (PSS) as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that the service attempted to hinder the execution of a detention warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. Officers were dispatched to the PSS office located within the presidential compound in Seoul, where they were awaiting access to conduct a search and seizure, according to Yonhap News.

The raid specifically targets acting PSS chief Kim Seong-hoon and Lee Kwang-woo, the head of the PSS bodyguard division. Both individuals are accused of abusing their power and obstructing official duties during a failed attempt to detain Yoon on December 3, following his controversial martial law decree. This is the fourth raid on the presidential compound since Yoon's impeachment in December.

Yoon is currently under criminal investigation for abuse of power and leading an insurrection, marking him as the first sitting president in South Korean history to face arrest. He is also subject to a travel ban. Since his impeachment on December 14, Yoon has been suspended from office, and his case is now pending before the Constitutional Court, which has up to six months to issue a ruling.

Yoon was initially detained on January 15, formally arrested on January 19, and indicted on January 26 as the investigation into his failed martial law decree continues. He has defended his actions in the face of mounting scrutiny.
