Hamas congratulates Syrian revolution

(MENAFN) Hamas has congratulated the Syrian people after armed opposition forces ousted former President Bashar Assad over the weekend. In a statement posted on the group's Telegram channel, Hamas expressed its support for the Syrian people's struggle for freedom and justice. The militant group encouraged Syrians to unite and overcome past divisions, expressing respect for their political choices and independence.

Ziad al-Nakhala, head of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (a Hamas ally), also voiced support, hoping Syria would continue to back the Palestinian cause.

The weekend’s events saw Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) jihadists, along with other anti-government groups, take control of Damascus following a rapid offensive across the country. Opposition representatives claim to have seized power, and Assad, after negotiations, decided to step down. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Assad and his family have sought asylum in Moscow, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
