UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly in favor of resolution demanding immediate, unconditional, permanent ceasefire between Israel, Hamas

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The resolution also called for the immediate release of all detainees. The resolution, supported by 158 out of 193 member states, came after earlier calls in October and December for a humanitarian truce and a ceasefire in Gaza. While General Assembly resolutions are non-binding, they carry significant political weight, reflecting global sentiment on the conflict.

The United States, Israel, and seven other countries opposed the resolution, while 13 countries abstained from voting. In addition to the ceasefire resolution, the General Assembly also passed a second resolution with 159 votes in favor, supporting UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees). This resolution urged Israel to respect the agency's mandate and allow its operations to continue without obstruction. Once again, the United States, Israel, and seven other countries voted against the resolution, with 11 countries abstaining.
