Kremlin declares Moscow, Tehran talking about Syria

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held talks on Monday, focusing on the escalating situation in Syria. The two leaders expressed concern over the large-scale attack by Islamist militants around Syria’s Aleppo, which threatens the country’s sovereignty and stability. They reaffirmed their support for Syria's efforts to restore constitutional order and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation through the 'Astana format,' which includes Turkey.

The militant group Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) launched an offensive against government forces in northwest Syria, claiming control of areas in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. Syrian forces, aided by Russian airstrikes, successfully halted the insurgents near Hama, though significant casualties were reported on both sides. The Russian military continues to provide support, with strikes targeting militant positions, weapons, and depots. This latest escalation marks the first major clash since a ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey in 2020.
