Israeli Premier confirms cabinet has agreed to ceasefire with Lebanon

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the cabinet has agreed to a ceasefire with Lebanon, while stressing that Israel will maintain the option of military action if Hezbollah violates the terms. Netanyahu provided three main reasons for supporting the deal: concentrating on Iran, restoring Israel’s military strength, and ensuring separation between the Lebanon and Gaza fronts. He emphasized that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have significantly weakened Hezbollah and warned that any attempt by the group to rebuild terror infrastructure or reactivate tunnels would lead to retaliation. Netanyahu also reiterated Israel's resolve to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

As part of the agreement, the Lebanese army will deploy in southern Lebanon once Israeli and Hezbollah forces withdraw. A joint statement from U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their commitment to supporting Lebanon’s economic development and strengthening its military. They also confirmed that the agreement aims to establish lasting peace, enabling safe returns for residents on both sides of the Blue Line.
