Devastation Of Mayotte Island Turning Imminent Former Comorian Ambassador

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 3. Mayotte is on the brink of destruction, the former Representative to the UN for Comoros, Mohamed Toihiri, said at an international conference organized by the Baku Initiative Group in Baku, Trend reports

Toihiri emphasized the devastating implications of French colonial policy for the island's residents. He stated that over the years, Comorians have weathered countless calamities.

"France has imposed so-called borders and artificial barriers that hinder the movement of people of the same origin residing on Mayotte. France aims to divide related peoples. The visa regime imposed on Comorians creates significant problems, especially for health-related travel," he said.

He also pointed out the nail in the coffin of France's colonial policies, which caused a sea of troubles, resulting in thousands of deaths and countless others hanging by a thread.

"Comorians face restrictions on movement and comfortable living. During Operation Wuambushu, or 'Return,' French armed forces destroyed many homes, killed numerous people, and displaced many from their native land," Toihiri added.

The conference, titled "Illegal Occupation of the Island of Mayotte by France and the Comoros Union," is attended by political and social leaders from Mayotte, scholars, human rights advocates, NGO heads, and diplomats accredited in Azerbaijan.

Discussions focus on the history of French colonization, the impact of French occupation on Mayotte, geopolitical and economic interests driving French colonial policies, and the stance of international organizations on the issue.
