(MENAFN) Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski has suggested that Hungary should consider exiting the European Union (EU) and NATO if it disagrees with the policies of these organizations. Bartoszewski’s comments came in response to sharp criticism from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who had earlier accused Poland of hypocrisy in its dealings with Russia.
During a visit to Romania, Orban condemned Poland for allegedly engaging in business with Russia while accusing Budapest of maintaining a moral double standard. He labeled Poland’s approach as “the most sanctimonious and two-faced policy in all of Europe,” suggesting that Poland criticizes Hungary for its own dealings with Moscow.
In a counter-response, Bartoszewski denied the allegations, asserting that Poland does not conduct business with Russia and characterized Orban’s policies as being on the periphery of international norms. He questioned why Hungary remains a member of organizations it reportedly disapproves of and suggested that if Hungary finds the policies of the European Union and NATO untenable, it should leave these bodies. Bartoszewski even proposed that Orban could form a new alliance with Russia if he prefers.
This diplomatic spat comes as Hungary's Prime Minister has faced criticism from various European Union politicians for diverging from the bloc’s policies. Orban has been involved in controversial activities such as attempting a “peace mission” to resolve the Ukraine conflict, which included visits to Kiev, Moscow, and Beijing. Additionally, Hungary has secured exemptions from European Union sanctions and continues to purchase oil and gas from Russia, actions that have drawn further scrutiny from within the European Union.
