US announces substantial new army aid package valued at approximately USD1.7 billion
(MENAFN) In a notable escalation of its support for Ukraine, the United States has announced a substantial new military aid package valued at approximately USD1.7 billion. This latest infusion of aid aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses in response to the ongoing conflict with Russia, providing a comprehensive array of military equipment and supplies essential for countering the aggression.
The United States Department of Defense disclosed that the aid package includes USD200 million worth of equipment that will be quickly sourced from existing United States Army stockpiles. This immediate provision is intended to expedite the delivery of crucial resources to the battlefield. In addition, the remaining USD1.5 billion will be allocated from arms manufacturers, though these items will take longer to be delivered due to production and logistical timelines.
This aid package is designed to significantly enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities. It includes various types of air defense munitions to help protect against Russian aerial attacks, as well as missiles for artillery systems, ammunition for HIMARS precision rocket launchers, and an assortment of anti-tank weapons. The diverse range of equipment will bolster Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and respond effectively to ongoing threats.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed his appreciation through a social media statement, expressing thanks to United States President Joe Biden, Congress, and the American public for their enduring support. Zelensky underscored the critical importance of this aid in strengthening Ukraine’s defense efforts amidst the conflict.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the United States has emerged as a principal military supporter of Ukraine, committing over USD55 billion in various forms of military aid. This latest aid package is a testament to the continued United States commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and its efforts to resist and overcome the ongoing aggression.
