Number of effective AI invention patents in China surges to 378,000

(MENAFN) By the end of 2023, the number of effective artificial intelligence (AI) invention patents in China had surged to 378,000, marking a remarkable year-on-year growth rate of over 40 percent, according to data released by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on Monday. This growth rate in China is notably 1.4 times higher than the global average, highlighting the country’s significant strides in AI innovation.
The expansion of AI patents reflects the robust vitality of China’s digital economy. Last year, the core industries within the digital economy contributed 10 percent to the country’s GDP, underscoring the sector's growing importance. In 2023 alone, the number of invention patents granted in these core digital economy industries reached 406,000, which constitutes 45 percent of the total number of granted invention patents in China. Over the past five years, the average annual growth rate in these industries has been 21 percent, indicating a thriving landscape of technological innovation.
Ge Shu, a senior CNIPA official, reported that by the end of 2023, a total of 155,000 domestic enterprises had secured invention patents related to the digital economy. This figure represents an increase of 31,000 enterprises compared to the previous year, reflecting a growing engagement in digital economy innovations among Chinese companies.
Foreign enterprises are also expanding their patent portfolios within China’s digital economy sector. By the end of 2023, invention patents from 93 countries or regions were registered in China’s core digital economy industries, with the digital product manufacturing sector representing 61.8 percent of these patents. This indicates a global interest in China’s rapidly growing digital economy and highlights the country's role as a significant hub for digital innovation.
