Turkey's Istanbul Airport maintains status as busiest air hub in Europe from July 15-21

(MENAFN) Turkey's Istanbul Airport maintained its status as the busiest air hub in Europe from July 15-21, according to transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu. Uraloglu reported that the airport handled an average of 1,485 flights daily during this period, based on data from the European Organization for Air Navigation Safety (Eurocontrol).

The number of flights at Istanbul Airport represented a slight decrease of 0.5 percent from the previous week, as shown by Eurocontrol's data. Following Istanbul, Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport recorded 1,408 flights, a decrease of 0.4 percent, while Amsterdam Schiphol Airport had 1,401 flights, a decline of 0.2 percent from the previous week. Despite these slight reductions, all top airports, except Frankfurt, handled more flights than in the same period in 2023, with Frankfurt experiencing a 1 percent decrease.

The top ten airports faced significant disruptions due to an IT outage, with Istanbul Airport (iGA) and Palma de Mallorca both seeing a 6 percent drop in flights last Friday compared to the same day in 2023, and Frankfurt experiencing a 4 percent decline. This outage was caused by a software update from US-based cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike on July 19, which led to a global IT outage affecting devices running the Windows operating system, resulting in the cancellation of over 5,000 flights worldwide.

Antalya Airport in the Turkish Mediterranean resort city ranked eighth among Europe's busiest air hubs, with 1,036 flights between July 15-21. The UK was the busiest country in terms of air traffic, recording 6,286 flights, including overflights, followed by Spain with 5,923 flights and Germany with 5,280 flights. Turkey secured the fifth spot, with 3,959 flights during the same period.
