Turkey recommences electricity exports to Iraq after 3-year suspension

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Turkey resumed its electricity exports to Iraq after a three-year suspension, as announced by Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar on Monday. Bayraktar highlighted this development in a post on X, emphasizing that the resumption of electricity exports marks a significant step towards enhancing regional prosperity and peace through the broader Development Road Project. This ambitious initiative aims to strengthen connectivity between Turkey and Iraq through an integrated network of railways, roads, ports, and urban areas.

The Development Road Project, as outlined by Bayraktar, is envisioned to serve as a crucial "energy road" that will facilitate not only the export of electricity but also broader economic and infrastructural growth. The project reflects Turkey’s commitment to fostering closer ties with Iraq and supporting its development needs. The resumption of electricity exports is a key component of this initiative, aiming to address some of the pressing infrastructure challenges faced by Iraq.

In April, Bayraktar, alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, visited Iraq to explore potential areas of cooperation with Iraqi officials in Baghdad and Erbil. This visit underscored Turkey’s strategic interest in deepening its partnership with Iraq and laid the groundwork for the current resumption of electricity exports. The collaborative discussions aimed at addressing Iraq's energy and infrastructure deficits, which have been exacerbated by years of conflict.

Under the resumed agreement, Turkey will supply up to 300 megawatts of electricity to Iraq through a 400-kilovolt (kV) interconnection line. This support comes at a critical time for Iraq, which has struggled with frequent power shortages due to extensive damage to its infrastructure from decades of war. The electricity exports are expected to help alleviate some of the immediate energy needs and contribute to the broader reconstruction and development efforts in Iraq.
