US declares discussions around ceasefire in Sudan

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, the United States announced a significant diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that Washington has extended invitations to the warring factions in Sudan—the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—to participate in ceasefire negotiations scheduled to commence on August 14 in Switzerland. The U.S. aims to mediate these crucial talks in hopes of achieving a resolution to the devastating conflict that has plagued the northeast African nation.

Blinken emphasized the United States' dedication to collaborating with international partners to end the violence. The forthcoming negotiations will be supported by several key observers, including the African Union, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Nations. These observers will play a vital role in ensuring that the discussions are comprehensive and that any agreements reached are effectively monitored and implemented.

The conflict, which has been raging for over a year, pits the Sudanese regular army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, against the RSF, commanded by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The brutal fighting has led to tens of thousands of deaths and displaced more than 10 million people within Sudan, with an additional two million seeking refuge in neighboring countries, according to United Nations estimates.

Blinken outlined that the primary goals of the Switzerland talks are to achieve a nationwide cessation of violence, facilitate humanitarian access to those in dire need, and establish a robust monitoring and verification mechanism to ensure adherence to any agreements made. This diplomatic initiative represents a concerted effort by the U.S. and its international partners to address one of the most severe humanitarian crises currently unfolding.
