Iran’s port city hosts joint naval drill in Caspian Sea

(MENAFN) On Monday, a significant joint naval drill commenced in the Caspian Sea, focusing on ensuring shipping security and safety in the region. The exercise, named "2024 Hybrid Maritime Search, Rescue, and Security," is taking place off the coast of Bandar-e Anzali, a port city in Iran. This drill involves not only the Iranian Navy's maritime and aerial forces but also Russia's SB 45 vessel. Representatives from other Caspian Sea littoral states, including Azerbaijan, are supervising the exercise to ensure comprehensive regional cooperation.

The Iranian Navy's participation includes several missile cruisers, specifically the Peykan (Arrow), Joshan (Armor), Derafsh (Flag), and Separ (Shield). Additionally, two AB 212 helicopters are deployed for aerial operations. The aim of this exercise is to enhance interaction and cooperation between the maritime forces of Iran and its neighboring Caspian Sea countries: Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Azerbaijan. A key objective is to affirm the littoral states' stance against the presence of non-regional countries in the Caspian region.

The drill is scheduled to unfold over a period of four days and is divided into two main phases. The first phase, known as the coastal phase, involves developing operational designs, ensuring coordination among participating forces, and conducting relevant training exercises. The second phase, the tactical phase, will focus on practical operations including fire containment, rescue missions for shipwrecked and injured crew members, and conducting aerial photography for assessment and documentation.

This joint naval exercise reflects the ongoing commitment of Caspian Sea countries to bolster maritime security and operational readiness in the region. By conducting these drills, the participating nations aim to strengthen their collaborative capabilities and maintain regional stability amid growing maritime challenges.
