Transit of goods via Iran sees increase of 58.5 percent in 4 months

(MENAFN) The transit of goods through Iran has seen a substantial increase of 58.5 percent in the first four months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20-July 21) compared to the same period last year, as reported by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA). According to the latest data released by IRICA, over 7.6 million metric tons (mt) of goods were transited through Iran during this period, an Iranian news agency reported on Tuesday.

Among the Iranian border crossings, Piranshahr customs on the western border with the Iraqi Kurdistan Region ranked first in terms of transit increase, registering a remarkable 661 percent rise in transit during these four months. Following Piranshahr, Sarakhs, Parvizkhan, and Bashmaq customs also saw significant increases in transit activity.

In the previous Iranian calendar year 1402, IRICA announced that 17.79 million tons of commodities were transited through Iran, marking a 36.52 percent increase compared to the preceding year. This consistent growth underscores Iran's expanding role as a crucial transit hub in the region.

Transport and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash highlighted the "Iran Way" initiative introduced by the current Iranian government. This initiative facilitates neighboring countries' use of Iran as a route to access international waters. The "Iran Way" initiative is pivotal in showcasing Iran's potential as a land of transit opportunities, emphasizing the country's strategic location and its extensive network of road and rail routes.

The current Iranian government's policy of enhancing political and economic relations with neighboring countries, coupled with the increasing global emphasis on road and rail transportation, has significantly contributed to the growth in the transit of goods through Iran. The concerted efforts and cooperation of transportation and trade-related organizations in establishing and activating transit corridors through the country have further fueled this growth.

Iran's strategic geographical location places it at the crossroads of several important international trade corridors. This unique positioning enables Iran to play a significant role in regional goods transit, offering considerable economic benefits. By leveraging its status and geographical advantages, Iran can greatly enhance its role in regional and global trade and transit networks.
