School structure collides murders 22 in Nigeria

(MENAFN) In a devastating incident in central Nigeria's Plateau state, a two-story school building tragically collapsed, leading to the deaths of 22 individuals and leaving 132 others injured. The building, part of Saint Academy located in the Busa Buji community, gave way around 07:30 GMT on Friday while students were engaged in their third-term exams. The local authorities have identified the collapse as a result of the building’s “weak structure” and its precarious position near a riverbank. Among the injured, six are reported to be in critical condition.

Musa Ashoms, the Nigerian Commissioner for Information, has announced that to facilitate immediate medical care, the government has instructed hospitals to prioritize treatment without requiring documentation or payment. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “tragic, unfortunate, heart-wrenching, and a gloomy situation.” He commended the prompt response of both the search and rescue teams and the local residents who quickly mobilized to assist in evacuating students and staff from the scene.

Governor Mutfwang has directed both the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency to offer the necessary support to the survivors of this disaster. This recent tragedy echoes a similar catastrophic event in 2021, when a 21-storey building under construction in Lagos collapsed, resulting in at least 45 deaths.
