Iran’s Imam Khomeini Port handles 34 percent of total transit volume

(MENAFN) The director of Khuzestan Province’s Ports and Maritime Department, Abutaleb Gerailou, has reported that Imam Khomeini Port plays a crucial role in Iran's transit activities, handling 34 percent of the country's total transit volume. According to Gerailou, over one million tons of goods were transited through this port during the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year, from March 20 to June 20. This substantial volume underscores the port's significance in national transit operations.

Imam Khomeini Port, located at the northwestern end of the Persian Gulf near Ahvaz in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan province, is a key entry point for basic goods into the country. In addition to its transit role, the port unloaded more than 3.8 million tons of basic goods during the same period, highlighting its vital function in Iran's trade infrastructure.

Established in 1960 with just two berths, Imam Khomeini Port is now Iran’s second-largest operational port, following Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Hormozgan province. The port's development has been a longstanding priority for the Iranian government, given its importance in facilitating trade.

To further enhance its capabilities, Iran recently inaugurated a new loading platform at Imam Khomeini Port. The port currently boasts five docks that support daily loading and unloading operations. Additionally, in late December of the previous year, Iranian private companies signed investment agreements and memorandums worth 90 trillion rials (approximately USD180 million) for the port's development. Among these agreements, four contracts valued at 21.5 trillion rials (around USD43 million) were specifically aimed at boosting the port's capacity for handling goods. These contracts were formalized in a ceremony attended by Transport and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash during Transportation Week.
