Doha, Qatar: Al Shamal yesterday suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat against Dutch club FC Volendam in their first friendly encounter which was played as part of the preparatory camp in the Netherlands ahead of the new season.

Bonairean forward Quincy Hoeve had given the lead for the home team in the first minute of the friendly encounter at the Sportpark De Groenendijkse Kampen in Cuijk.

Al Shamal, one of many Qatari teams holding their pre-season training camps in Europe, fought well to restrict the Dutch club to just one goal as the match ended with a satisfactory result for the visitors who signed Dutch defender Sven van Beek from Heerenveen a day before. Van Beek, who has previously played for Feyenoord and represented the Netherlands U-21 team, is expected to be a valuable addition to Al Shahaniya's defense in the upcoming season. Apart from Al Shamal, Al Rayyan, and Al Ahli are also training in the Netherlands as they prepare for the Ooredoo Stars League which kicks off on August 9.

Al Rayyan will meet Dutch club FC Utrecht in a friendly today in their opening friendly match of the training camp. Al Gharafa also began their training camp in Slovakia on Tuesday, while Al Duhail continued their camp in Austria. Al Shahaniya also commenced their pre-season training in Turkiye as they gear up for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Al Khor SC announced the signing of Iraq's Ayman Hussein from Al Quwa Al Jawiya. The signing of the 28-year-old striker, who joined the Qatari club on a two-year deal, will be a major boost as the club aims to make the most out of the highly experienced striker who had played for clubs in Tunisia, Morocco, and the UAE, as well as Umm Salal and Al Markhiya in the QSL.

Additionally, Al Wakrah have signed Tunisian player Aissa Laidouni from Union Berlin in a four-year contract that runs until 2028. Laidouni has previously played at French clubs Angers, Les Herbiers, and FC Chambly, as well as Romanian team FC Voluntari and Hungarian side Ferencvarosi TC before joining Union Berlin.

Laidouni made his international debut with the Tunisian national team during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and scored his first international goal against Zambia during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers.
