Media reports Russia planning on initiating Starlink-style internet network

(MENAFN) Russia is preparing to enhance access to high-speed internet for users across its extensive public transport system by developing a new satellite network, according to reports from Izvestia, citing official documents. This initiative aims to facilitate internet connectivity via non-geostationary satellite systems, allowing individual users or transportation companies to purchase a transmitter-receiver device that can be installed in vehicles such as cars, planes, or train carriages.

In May, Russian Railways entered a cooperation agreement with the space company BURO 1440 to explore the application of satellite technologies. This partnership aims to develop digital services leveraging low-orbit satellites, creating innovative IT solutions tailored for the transportation industry. Evgeny Charkin, the director of information technologies at Russian Railways, stated that services utilizing low-orbit satellite communications are expected to be in high demand for both passenger and cargo transport across Russia, including for the operation of unmanned vehicles. He indicated that testing of this technology could commence as early as next year.

Additionally, Maksut Shadaev, the head of Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, announced plans to provide Wi-Fi services on Russian aircraft starting in 2028. Earlier this year, Shadaev revealed the country's ambition to launch 737 low-orbit satellites by 2030 to enhance terrestrial internet speeds and expand connectivity options.

This initiative reflects Russia's broader strategy to modernize its transport infrastructure and improve digital services, making high-speed internet more accessible to travelers and operators alike across the nation.
