(MENAFN) Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has made a bold prediction that cell phones will soon become obsolete, replaced by brain implants that facilitate direct communication with technology. Musk's remarks were made in response to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from a parody account, suggesting the idea of controlling a phone through a Neuralink interface. Musk responded confidently, stating, "In the future, there will be no phones, just Neuralinks."
Musk's biotech venture, Neuralink, made headlines earlier this year when it successfully implanted a brain chip in 30-year-old quadriplegic Noland Arbaugh. This groundbreaking procedure involved placing a chip, roughly the size of a coin, into the area of the brain responsible for movement intention. The chip enables the recording and transmission of brain signals wirelessly to an app, which decodes these signals to facilitate movement.
Neuralink's aspirations extend beyond this initial success. According to a press release from last year, the company’s Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface (PRIME) program is designed to create a fully implantable, wireless interface. Initially, this technology aims to allow users to control computer cursors or keyboards purely with their thoughts. Ultimately, it hopes to offer revolutionary treatments for a range of conditions, including paralysis, blindness, obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.
In a previous interview with Joe Rogan in 2018, Musk elaborated on Neuralink’s potential, suggesting that it could enable humans to communicate without words and potentially achieve a symbiotic relationship with artificial intelligence. This ambitious vision for the future underscores Musk's belief in the transformative power of technology and the role that brain-computer interfaces could play in human advancement.
