Fine Up To QR3,000 For Smoking In Prohibited Spaces, MOI Warns

Doha, Qatar: Ministry of Interior (MOI) reminds general public that smoking is strictly prohibited in metro vehicles and stations, as well as in all forms of public transportation.

It warned that any one found violating could be penalised with a fine of QR1,000 to QR3,000.

In a video message on its social media, it stated, "to ensure public safety in metro vehicles, please adhere to adhere Article 17 of Law No 10 of 2016 on tobacco control that prohibits smoking in enclosed spaces."

Qatar is among the few countries where tobacco smoke pollution is almost non-existent as there is no tobacco cultivation or manufacturing of its products in the country.

Also there are strict legislations in place that ban smoking in indoor spaces and to ensure that these products are not sold to those aged below 18 years. Selling such products in areas at a distance of less than 1km from schools and other educational and training institutions is also banned.

Qatar has also provided all necessary capabilities to help smokers quit this harmful habit through HMC's Tobacco Control Center, a WHO Collaborating Center.
